about

While doomscrolling during COP26, I came across George Monbiot's “'Green growth’ doesn’t exist” piece (www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/sep/29/green-growth-economic-activity-environment). It struck me that doing "less of almost everything" was the opposite of the sentiment in Queen's "I Want It All". It made me want to try to make a song that was the opposite of Queen's rock excess: introspective and elegiac instead of bombastic and triumphant.

The music quickly took a dubstep direction, which I was happy to go with as that genre has recently been overrun with bombastic cliché and I liked the idea of subverting expectations of the drop with whispered vocals and a brooding, minimal, ethereal sound.

The lyrics ended up being autobiographical: starting with my frustration at needing to fly for work and ending with one of the XR samba breaks that I have been playing at actions across Brighton and London via references to Radiohead and Steve Jobs.

lyrics

No sitting on planes,
to sit at a desk,
to argue about targets,
we set for ourselves.

Just to run a rat race,
that no one ever wins.
I want less of almost everything,
'cause forget that noise.

Forget that noise.
Forget that noise.
Forget that noise.
Forget that noise.

Wear clothes until they wear out,
Mend the things that break down,
Read the books I haven't read,
Hear the music I haven't heard.

See all the wonders of this world,
and leave no trace behind.
I want less of almost everything,
'cause we can't live this way.

We can't live this way.
We can't live this way.
We can't live this way.
We can't live this way.

Living in a fantasy world.
Living in a fantasy world.
Living in a fantasy world.
Living in a fantasy world.

There is no planet B.
There is no planet B.
There is no planet B.
There is no planet B.

Time is running out.
Time is running out.
Time is running out.
Time is running out.
