The Spirit Of Gravity

by Alien Alarms x Ieva Dubova

/

about

As soon as I was invited to contribute to the Spirit Of Gravity birthday compilation I wanted to use Nietzsche’s words, so was excited to find that no-one else had sampled them in the 21 year history of the Brighton music collective.

While thinking about musical ways to portray the battle with The Spirit Of Gravity, it occurred to me that making electronic music is often a constant battle to resist the pull of the perfectly quantized grid. That reminded me of a conversation with Ieva Dubova about one of her wonderfully free piano pieces that was played on the Trust The Doc radio show.

I sent Ieva an early demo of a spasming sequencer scattering drum polyrhythms over a chromatically descending bass part and she immediately captured the feel of a piano with bird nature escaping, battling and then defeating the warping grid in a single, amazing improvised piano performance.

This track will be featured on a forthcoming 21st birthday compilation released by The Spirit of Gravity on vinyl and as a digital download in 2023.

"Alien Alarms' mix of intertwining synths, sounds and spoken word samples are added to by Ieva Dubova's crystalline modal piano parts to form something futuristic and beautifully unsettling" - Trust The Doc

lyrics

The spirit of gravity.
Almost in the cradle we are apportioned with heavy words and worths: good and evil.
But I am hostile to the spirit of gravity, that is bird nature.
Deadly hostile; supremely hostile; originally hostile.
He who wisheth one day to fly, must first learn standing and walking and running and climbing and dancing.
One doth not fly into flying.
He who would become light and be a bird, must love himself.
One must learn to love oneself.
For the way doth not exist.
Thus spake Zarathustra.
